Even Team Trump realized his policy of kidnapping children looked awful. Under Trump’s “zero tolerance” child separation policy, federal agents forcibly took thousands of migrant children from their families and kept them in inadequate facilities. Sometimes they were later unable to reunite the families because they hadn’t bothered to keep good records.
The backlash to Trump’s “policy” grew so severe that the Trump Administration figured they should do something to improve their “optics.” So, they enlisted beloved First Lady Melania Trump to visit a shelter in McAllen, TX where kids were being stored.
OTDI 2018, FLOTUS boarded her flight wearing a jacket which, apparently, revealed her attitude towards the suffering children. Its bold letters read: I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?
"I’m going to guess this is one message she did not steal from Michelle Obama," joked Stephen Colbert, in reference to Melania’s cribbed speech at the ‘16 RNC convention.
The aftermath:
The president was reportedly was furious at his wife and her PR team; they responded by claiming the jacket was supposed to be some sort of statement to the press. Well, at least that was their first attempt at an excuse; others came later.
Melania’s jacket became a rallying cry for advocates fighting the kidnapping policy. They brought “I CARE” t-shirts and signs to demonstrations. Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV) tweeted a picture of herself wearing an “I care” sign on the back of her blazer, with the caption “Hey #FLOTUS, try this on for size. #WhoWoreItBest #ICare.”
Meanwhile, most horribly, President Trump’s agents continued to heartlessly -- and illegally -- separate children from their families.
Btw, personal contemptuous disregard for other humans runs deep in the Trump Family. Did you see Donald the other day tell a crowd at his rally that he didn't care about them, he only cared about their votes?
